Super Mario Bros.

Do you have what it takes to save the Mushroom Princess?

You'll have to think fast and move even faster to complete this quest! The Mushroom Princess is being held captive by the evil Koopa tribe of turtles. It's up you toy to rescue her from the clutches of the Koopa King before time runs out. But it won't be easy. To get to the Princess, you'll have to climb mountains, cross seas, avoid bottomless pits, fight off turtle soldiers and a host of black magic traps that only a Koopa King can devise. It's another non-stop adventure from the SUPER MARIO BROS.!

Rescuing Princess Toadstool from King Koopa won't be a walk in the park. Your adventure in the Mushroom Kingdom will lead you through dangerous pits, underground tunnels, towering treetops, lava-filled castles, and much more!

The Mushroom Kingdom has 8 worlds, each divided into 4 stages. Every world ends with a castle where a mushroom retainer is held captive by King Koopa, with the princess waiting in the last one.

Throughout the Mushroom Kingdom, you will find special Question Blocks that contain helpful items:

Magic Mushroom
Enlarges you into Super Mario, allowing you to break bricks with your jump

Fire Flower
Gives Mario and Luigi the ability to shoot bouncing fireballs from their fingers

Starman
Makes you temporarily invincible, able to defeat enemies by touching them

Normally, being touched by one of Koopa's minions would mean trouble for Mario and Luigi. With the Magic Mushroom or Fire Flower, they can survive, but they'll revert to their original 'small' size.

In Super Mario form with the Magic Mushroom or Fire Flower, you can break bricks above you. In some stages, this can create new paths or shortcuts.

Mario and Luigi can earn extra lives in various ways. The easiest method is to collect 1-Up mushrooms found in Question Blocks. You'll also gain an extra life for every 100 coins collected, so grab as many as you can. For expert players, jumping on an enemy repeatedly without touching the ground can earn you multiple 1-Ups.

Mario doesn't stop immediately when you let go of the D-Pad. Momentum is essential for his jumps and movement; mastering it will help you navigate tricky areas.

Some stages will take you underwater. Mario will gradually sink, so press [A] to quickly rise. Timing is crucial for swimming straight. Be prepared for strong currents in pits that will try to pull you down, so swim swiftly through them.

There are many hidden blocks throughout the Mushroom Kingdom. Some are completely invisible, while others look like normal bricks. Most will contain helpful items, but some lead to secret areas.

At the end of each level, the flagpole will reward you with points based on how high you reach: 100, 400, 800, 2000, or 5000 points. If the timer ends in 1, 3, or 6, you'll receive the same amount of fireworks worth 500 points each.

The timer starts counting down when each stage begins, and if it hits zero, you’ll lose a life. But don’t let it stress you too much — a time limit of 400 equals 160 actual seconds.

By pressing [Down] on certain pipes, you can discover alternate routes that can skip entire segments of a stage. It's a good idea to check every pipe you come across, as you never know which ones might lead to a shortcut.

King Koopa's army has spread through the Mushroom Kingdom over the land, sea and air. Knowing how to defeat them will be the key to saving the princess:

Goomba
These slow moving minions patrol the Mushroom Kingdom and can be defeated with a simple jump
Koopa Troopa
When jumped on, they will retreat inside their shells — kick them to send them flying into other enemies
Pirana Plants
These sneaky creatures will hide in pipes and their sharp teeth make them immune to being jumped on
Koopa Troopa (red)
Unlike their braver comrades, these turtles will patrol an area without going over ledges
Koopa Paratroopa (red)
Flying koopas that float straight up and down; jumping on them removes their wings
Koopa Paratroopa
Wings allow them to jump as they move but jumping on them turns them into normal Koopa Troopas
Bloober
Found only under water, they will descend slowly but can leap up quickly if you are above them
Cheep-cheep
These dangerous fish will slowly glide in the water but on land, they will quickly fly through the air over bridges
Lakitu
There's no escape from this fast moving enemy — he will hide at the top, throwing Spiny Eggs down at you
Spiny
Immune to being jumped on and can't be tipped over; they can only be defeated with a Fire Flower or a Starman
Buzzy Beetle
He will hide in his shell like the Koopa Troopa after being stomped, but is immune to fireballs
Hammer Brothers
Often in pairs, they will throw streams of hammers in an arc while hopping between platforms
Bullet Bill
Shot from their cannons in a straight path, they will travel through all objects but can be jumped on

Mario's jump can defeat the weaker members of Koopa's army, either by landing on them or breaking the bricks beneath them. Koopa Troopa shells can also be kicked into other enemies to knock them out. The Fire Flower lets you shoot fireballs across the screen, while the Starman will defeat any enemy that touches you while it's active.

After being stomped, the cowardly Koopa Troopa will retreat into his shell. Kick it from the side to send it flying, but be careful — if it hits a solid object, it will bounce right back at you!

At the end of each world, you'll face King Koopa in his castle. A simple jump won’t defeat him; you'll need to reach the axe at the end of the bridge to drop him into the lava. Watch out for his fire breath as you jump over or run beneath him to get to the other side safely.

In some stages, you can find secret areas called Warp Zones that will transport you to other worlds. Knowing their locations will help you quickly return after a game over.

Super Mario Bros.

At the time of its release, Super Mario Bros. set a new standard for platformers and raised the bar on what a video game should be. The physics system completely blew all preceding games out of the water; it's so well crafted that it remains impressive even to this day. Mario's movements and jumps feel so natural that even a first time player will immediately feel right at home. Before you know it, you'll find yourself expertly gauging the distance to the next enemy, obstacle, or pit to determine your next move. In addition to jumping, Mario can also duck, which can be used to dodge enemies like Koopa Paratroopa, Bullet Bill, and even King Koopa's fire. These combined abilities give you an unprecedented level of control over your character.

Each of the Mushroom Kingdom's stages is expertly crafted around Mario's capabilities. There's often a Goomba waiting for you right after a long jump, a Koopa Troopa patrolling down some stairs that will be challenging to jump on, or even a Piranha Plant that will make you abandon your next jump over a pipe. Encountering enemies under a row of bricks may make them difficult to jump on, while going over may lead you straight into another enemy walking off a higher platform. King Koopa's minions may not be very strong on their own, but when combined with the environment, or each other, they become a dangerous force to overcome. The stage design will also completely change the way you play. You can move quickly through flat areas, but treetop (or mushroomtop) stages will force you to be much more cautious when it comes to sticking your landing.

A real innovation in Super Mario Bros. is the sheer amount of options available for playing through each area. Going down a warp pipe or climbing up a vine may open an alternate route that will allow you to skip an entire segment of the stage while also finding helpful items. However, some secrets are much harder to find. The elusive Warp Zones can be used to skip entire worlds and can be used to quickly take you to the end of the game when combined. Finding these secrets adds a lot of replayability and can make the game much easier to navigate once discovered. You can even avoid every Power-Up if you want — the entire game can be completed a small Mario if you're looking for an extra challenge. Instead of simply running to the right in every stage, it's completely up to you what route you want to take.

These combined elements formed a game so impressive that a middle-aged plumber from Brooklyn became Nintendo's mascot and one of the most recognizable characters in the world. You may have heard Super Mario Bros called a masterpiece many times before, but there's really no other way to describe it.
