Kirby's Adventure

In the magical place known as Dream Land, Kirby awoke after his lunch feast nap. To his surprise, he realized he didn't have any dreams. Thinking this very strange, Kirby went to the Dream Spring to investigate. When he arrived, Kirby discovered none other than King Dedede bathing in its waters. Confronting him, Kirby learns that King Dedede has taken the Star Rod and broken it into 7 different pieces. It's now up to Kirby to get back all 7 pieces of the Star Wand from King Dedede's friends to restore the Dream Spring and return dreams back to Dream Land.

Kirby's Moves
By pressing [Up], Kirby can inflate himself and fly around. While inflated, Kirby can exhale a burst of air that can damage an enemy in front of him.

Kirby has the ability to inhale enemies and objects by holding the [B] button and can then spit them out. He can only use this ability if he has no active power.

After inhaling an certain enemies, Kirby can copy their abilities to use for himself by pressing the [Down] button. His current power is shown at the bottom of the screen.

There are 7 different levels and each has their own lobby map with a set of stages. Move to new stages by opening their doors. You can also replay old stages to get abilities and other goodies.

After you complete all of the stages in a level, the boss's door will appear in the level lobby. Each boss is very different from the last so watch them carefully for an opening!

Try your luck in the bonus stages found in level lobbies to win extra lives. Each bonus stage game is different so don't expect it to be the same as last time. Some bonus stages can be revealed by finding secrets in normal levels.

Visit the Arena in the level lobby to square off against a mini boss. If you defeat the mini boss, a Maxim Tomato will fall that can restore Kirby's health. You can also copy the defeated boss's power.

Kirby's Adventure

For many, this game was a respectable sendoff to the NES. Since it was developed 2 years into the Super NES era, the developers had total mastery over the hardware and understood exactly how to implement their ideas after reflecting on the original Kirby game for the Game Boy. Some of the visual effects push the console to its absolute limits and it will make you wonder how this was even possible, especially without the slowdowns the system is known for.

The real star appeal of this Kirby game is the introduction of copy abilities. By inhaling certain enemies, you not only defeat them but also steal their powers to use for yourself. These copy powers don't just effect your attack type; they can completely change the way you play through an area. Much like in Mega Man, it can have a huge effect on the way you progress through a stage and defeat its boss. You can even return to completed stages to pick up any copy abilities you may want. With a change of ability, some of these stages can feel entirely different because they will require a new approach.

The minigames are a welcome addition that helps break up the gameplay since they all have lots of variety between them. It's almost as if HAL had a bin of great ideas that couldn't be made into their own games, so they were instead implemented here in their most basic forms. Despite the impressive amount of powers to choose from, Kirby is still plenty capable on his own. Since he always has the ability to puff himself up and fly, some enemies and areas can simply be avoided entirely if you wish. While it's fair to say Kirby's Adventure is a bit easy compared to most NES games, it's more accurate to say its 'SNES hard,' which is understandable for a game released in 1993. For any fans of the platformer genre, you won't want to pass up this incredible and unique game.
